Sometimes, the “old” way is simply the better way and I’m talking about classic steam train rides that are as romantic as can be. Yes, steam trains are back and in a big way! The old Ceres Rail Company steam train’s operations were halted during the 1990’s because it was not being profitable anymore. But on November 28, 2015, it is up and running again, and has been providing enjoyable train rides since then.
The train carries 120 passengers per trip and the 11-hour train ride from Cape Town to Ceres and back starts outside the Royal Cape Yacht Club at 07:30 AM. The locomotive makes it’s way to Ceres, journeying through Wellington, Nuwekloof Pass, Wolseley, Michell’s Pass and then arriving at Ceres Golf Estate at about 12:00. At the Golf Estate, passengers get off the train and may proceed to tour the grounds or enjoy the buffet style lunch that they have previously paid for during booking. The passengers that will be returning to Cape Town will have to board the train again for departure back to Cape Town at around 13:45 to leave as the train will leave at exactly 14:00.
As of this writing, the prices for the tickets are as follows: R800 per adult, R500 per child and infants under 2 are free, though you still have to book them. Lunch is not included in the price but may be purchased upon booking.
